Sitting on a Dock

Seeing the California Sea Lions hanging out on docks is a common site in the Monterey Bay area. I heard from a local (Dan Tracy) that this dock cost a pretty penny to construct only to have the Sea Lions claim it as theirs even before it was operational.

The Sea Lions forage at night so they hangout at the dock all day. This offers us a chance to view some interesting behavior. Wildlife never fails to entertain...

The juveniles change positions often. much to the dislike of some adults.

Some of the adults don't get along either.

Although, you might see a tender moment every now and then.

Neither the juveniles nor the adult females bother the large males. An adult male Sea Lion weighs in at over 600 pounds. Almost 3 times the weight of an adult female.

There may be some pretenders...

...but everyone knows who is king.

Looks like a lot of fun. Probably could spend the whole day there clicking all the time. Nice shots. I love the captions.

  4. Anonymous,
I did spend a good bit of time there. If the sun hadn't set I would have been there longer. It's hard to leave when one is being entertained :)
